Merry Christmas and Happy New Year Evansville and Mount Vernon
Merry Christmas and Happy New Year Evansville and Mount Vernon, Indiana

Well, it is that time of year again…
This marks the end of a one year and the beginning of something new. 2009 represented a lot of new programs and offerings for our schools. It also left us in mourning the loss of a truly great martial artist and father in Grandmaster Roger D. Barnes. With all that, we have experienced growth, change, and loss. Just like the seasons, we will have a usher forth proudly and strongly into the new year.
We are excited to have you in our family and can’t wait to show you what we have in store for 2010. It is truly going to be exciting.
As we get ready for New years, I am interested in knowing what your ‘New Year’s resolutions’ will be, write them in below. The one with the best resolution gets a FREE FITNESS BOOTCAMP for a MONTH!

What do our kids learn in ‘Karate Class?’

What do kids learn from karate
With ‘Back To School’, parents look for programs to get their children involved.
What do kids REALLY learn from ‘karate’ or martial arts lessons?
Instead of ’sales pitch’ I wanted to let you know what other parents are saying about our program. It is my hope that you will help spread the word about our program and the benefits children can receive and parents expect from a well-organized school.
“My Grand-daughter has come out of her shell. Before she wouldn’t talk to anyone. After learning martial arts from Community Martial Arts, she is more talkative and open to relate with others.”
“My son had discipline problems at school. After attending Community Martial Arts, he is doing better in school and getting better grades.”
“I have two grandchildren in this program. I am seeing positive results and the beginnings of proper discipline.”
“We were able to see results in our son after one class”
“Our son has anger problems. This class has helped him control his anger and deal with issue in a healthy way”
“We have five children in the program and we are seeing a difference. They say ‘Yes Sir’ and ‘Yes Ma’am’ which has helped a lot at home.”
“We struggled to get our son to do well in class, he loves Community Martial Arts so much that he does well in school just so he won’t miss a class”
This is where you come in… I want to reward you for telling others about our program. We recently did a ‘Back To School’ pencil blitz having our students spread the word about our program by sharing Community Martial Arts pencils with their classmates. So, I am going to make a VERY, VERY special deal for you our parents…
If you refer a student who joins one of our programs, I am going to give you a choice of $50 cash OR a Free Month of lessons! That is my way of saying THANKS!

Kids Learn Self Defense
Kids at Community Martial Arts learn practical self defense skills. Here is a sample video of children practicing self defense skills in a drill session. You will notice that these kids learn to use control and safely practice the techniques without hurting each other. The benefits of this training is that they are learning ‘contact’ response but how to do it safely.
This allows them to build the skill attributes necessary to successfully exercise real self defense in a stress environment.

A Community Martial Arts Black Belt…

Girls Learn Self Defense
Your daughter leaves her dorm room with books in hand heading toward her study group. Sharing a conversation with a friend, she notices a cute boy eyeing her. Blushing, she turns her head away and quietly waves her friend goodbye as she continues down the sidewalk to the library.
She is poised and confident. She is a black belt from Community Martial Arts.
Two fraternity boys are drinking as she passes by. The boys call out to her. Ignoring them she continues her course only to find that one boy, the bigger boy, has caught up with her.
As he grabs at her and tries to pull her close, her training takes over. She turns to face the attacker with a ferocious kick to the knee dropping him quickly. She follows up with strikes to the groin and head leaving the attacker whimpering with her knee to the back of his head while she calls campus security on her cellphone.
She is a Community Martial Arts Black Belt.

Evansville Women Attacked
I just read a troubling story from the courier press. It speaks of a woman being held against her will in her parents home and raped.
It is a tragic account where a woman was attacked, hurt, and taken advantage of. It saddens me that we live in such a society like this. That is why I am adamant that everyone needs to learn self defense.
If you have a daughter, wife, or loved one who is at risk and afraid that they cannot fend off such an attack, please contact us so that we can help the learn the defenses they need to survive.
If there is enough interest, I will put on a free rape prevention clinic. If you are interested in such a clinic, please let me know!

Having a reason and a purpose

Women Need To Learn Self Defense
I read an interesting article today that while it is a ‘racey’ topic, I felt that the overall story was something to mention.
Exploited women in the Indian state of Tamil Nadu are learning self defense.
You can read the story here http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/south_asia/8093946.stm
What is interesting is that these women (prostitutes) are being beaten, taken advantage of unfairly, robbed and degraded. It saddens me that women still have to sell themselves on the street in order to make a living. However, I am happy to hear that organizations are standing up for them and giving them the much needed training they need in order to survive.
Here in the United States, women are still being taken advantage of. Aggression, lack of respect and degradation, along with unfair prejudice is still haunting the female population. Being the father of three beautiful girls, it pains me to think of what they will have to face as teenagers and young women.
With the rise of teenage pregnancy and a society that is more open to sexual contact as a form of ‘expression’ I feel that this leaves women at risk. That is why I believe that women need to be taught self defense. The problem is that people believe that once you ‘learn the moves’ you are alright.
What statistics show is that women who actively practice self defense are nine times more likely to survive an attack versus those who merely went to a couple of classes. You see that the difference is an active and continual ‘practice’ outweighs a few lessons.
If you know of someone who is at risk, or you have a daughter about to turn into a teenager, I highly recommend them getting into a self defense program. If you are in the Evansville or Mount Vernon Indiana area, I highly recommend my two schools (http://www.communitymartialarts.com).

Upping the Intensity
Testing is around the corner…
Are you ready?
One of the biggest things I have noticed and has been commented by the other instructors is the lack of intensity we see when students do their forms.
It isn’t that the students do not understand what we are saying or haven’t observed us putting our all in our forms, it comes down to just not doing it.
When we practice, it is important to put our heart and soul into it. It has often been said that the way you practice is the way you will respond in real life.
So if you were ever faced with the situation where you actually had to use your self defense skills, how would you fare?
If the old addage is true and you practice like a slug on sleeping pills you might not come out of the confrontation the way you invisioned. You might come out much worse!
Upping the intensity is the key. When you practice striking or kicking, do it with power and intensity. Do it with the mindest that if someone was attacking you, you could defend yourself. Practice as if your survival was at stake.
Here are some key indicators as if you are practicing in class with the right intensity:
- Are you sweating?
- Do you feel like you got a workout at the end of class?
- Do you feel confident with your abilities?
- Do you feel know deep down you can defend yourself?
- When you leave class to you feel you left your all on the mat?
Take this into consideration as it will dramatically improve your performance in class. If you are discouraged that you are not advancing as quickly as you would like (a key indicator), take some time and really put yourself to the test. Push yourself in class and get the absolute most out of it.
While it is the instructor’s job to teach you, it is your job to put it to use in your own way.
