Sample of Dragon From Dark Water
[local /wp-content/uploads/2009/02/mikedragonfromdarkwater.wmv]
This is an example of the form ‘Dragon from Dark Water.’ While it could use some improvement especially in the kicks, this is a good example of a beginner demonstrating the form. You can use it as a reference, just remember that this isn’t the perfect example to learn from.
If you would like to purchase the DVD where I walk you through the complete form step by step, along with 35 minutes of self defenses broken down from the form….
You can buy it here for $25
Two Phases of the Martial Arts
“Dancing mind, thinking body…”
There is a physical phase and a mental phase to the martial arts…
Simply put, the key to mastering the martial arts is enable your body to to react on its own behalf and your mind free to clearly and calmly react to the situation.
Most Yoga and Qi Gong practitioners miss it. People practice these programs or exercises for the ‘health benefit’ or to ‘stretch.’
The real purpose of these exercises is to teach the mind to be disciplined while your body is forced to perform complex movements, stresses or deal with pain.
The point of learning to ‘fight’ or spar in the martial arts not only trains the physical body to learn how to protect itself, it also trains the brain to respond to the situation. With enough training the mind should calm itself. You will come to a point of not worrying about being hit or getting hurt; you will find yourself devising a way to find the upper hand or winning the fight.
The end result being that when you find yourself in a conflict, you can then address that situation with calmness and focus. Instead of reverting to fight or flight, you can make yourself think clearly.
In the ‘real world,’ this type of training extends beyond that of the martial arts. With proper training and focus, you will be able to address other stresses in your life. Take for example the stresses with relationships with co-workers. Instead of responding emotionally with an outburst that may fray relationships further with your co-worker, take time to think clearly and find a solution to your problem.
It is ok for you to come home and meditate on what to do. When I have a unique problem that needs resolution, I normally spend some time alone to think clearly. I focus my breath and meditate on the options at hand. This type of practice will make your mental game razor sharp. If your practice as much as we do physically to train our body to perform complex and devastating movements, why not do the same for your mind?
Self Defense Demonstration from Jew Gar Technique

Here is an intersting self defense technique that I presented at a camp that I taught in 2006. The basic concept here is learning to avoid the strike, parry and strike targets that yield the greatest results and follow up until the opponent is down. This is some great stuff to learn and use.

Community Martial Arts Evansville Video Blog
Tonight we had a great turnout with our kids class even though it was bitterly cold. On top of that we have some new visitors and new student sign up {Arianna Wilkerson]. The adults class had a very tough workout that combined striking and kicking combinations that left everyone exhausted in the end.
Why should I buy from you?

Being in business is tough. You have to spend time learning how to sell your product or service. You have to spend time ensuring that your product or service is sell-worthy. You also need to let people know about your product or service.
However the failure of small businesses is that it is where they stop. They stop after creating a unique product or service that they think is profitable to sell. They spend money marketing their products or service in the local paper or other more expensive marketing channels.
They wonder why they are still having trouble making it.
Why should your customer choose you over some alternative down the street?
That question is so important that it trumps just about anything else you may be doing at the time. If you cannot answer that question you are losing business or worse. You may be giving your competition ample opportunity to prove why THEY not YOU are who your customers should buy from.
From my perspective, I own two martial arts schools. There are competitors on every corner. Seems that there are new kids with their new black belts eager to make their martial arts millions or become the next movie phenom. What makes me different? Why would a parent WANT TO BUY from me instead of the new guys with flashier schools and prime locations.
I could say my many years of experience. I could also mention my long standing commitment to the community. But those are just ‘details.’
I have to convey to my customers that they truly are investing in the very best around. That I am not some meat head ego maniac who wants everybody to jump into the ring and fight. I am not the ‘King of The Demo’ type school where I travel all over the country for glory and trophies.
I am the ‘real deal’ self defense instructor that teaches students to avoid a fight AND the punch to defend themselves. I have 28 years of experience in the martial arts and I teach the very best in defense that is easy to learn and practice. I am a life coach that helps instill discipline, self confidence and respect that can only come from training in a true martial curriculum.
So I am not the…
- Over-testosterone, Ego-maniac who thinks that the only way to prove yourself is by fighting in the ring.
- ‘King of the Demo’ who teaches sport karate and point fighting and winning trophies as their focus
I am the…
Student focused, Self Defense Oriented, Life Coach mentoring, Martial Arts Instructor in Evansville and Mount Vernon Indiana trying to make a change in my students and the communities I serve.
Now that I know exactly who I am and why people should buy from me versus my competition, I can market more effectively and laser focus my efforts to attract the business I am looking for.
So…
If you are looking for trophies or getting in the ring, there are schools out there.
